Paver Edge Restraint Repair: Stop Pavers From Spreading
Every paver driveway, walkway and patio depends on its edges. The edge restraint is what holds the outer row of pavers in place, and that outer row holds in everything else. When the edge fails, pavers start drifting outward, gaps open across the surface, and the border drops into the grass or mulch. It’s one of the most overlooked causes of paver problems we see in Jacksonville.
We’re Jax Exterior Cleaning & Paver Sealing. We fix failing edges as part of our paver repair work, then re-sand and seal so the whole surface stays locked together.
What an Edge Restraint Does
Pavers stay put through friction. Each paver presses against its neighbors, with joint sand in between, and the edge restraint acts as the wall that everything pushes against. Edges can be plastic or metal edging spiked into the ground, a concrete curb or footer, or a soldier course of pavers set in concrete. When that wall moves, so does the field of pavers behind it.
Signs Your Edge Is Failing
- The border row is tilting outward or sinking into the lawn
- Gaps between pavers that get wider toward the edge
- Pavers along the edge rocking or separating
- Visible plastic edging that has lifted or snapped
- Edges crumbling where cars drive over the driveway apron
- Sand and base material washing into planting beds after rain
Why Edges Fail Around Here
Sandy soil and rain
Spikes holding plastic edging rely on firm soil. In our sandy soil, heavy rain and irrigation loosen them over time.
Cars and trucks over the edge
Driving over the edge of a driveway, especially at the apron or where people cut the corner, pushes the border down and out.
Landscaping work
Edging, trenching and new plantings next to pavers can disturb or cut the restraint without anyone noticing.
Missing restraint
Some installations simply never had a proper edge in certain spots.
How We Repair Paver Edges
- Free inspection. We walk the full perimeter, find where the edge has moved and check whether the field of pavers has shifted with it. About 5 to 10 minutes, and you don’t need to be home.
- Lift the border. We remove the edge pavers and any field pavers that have drifted.
- Rebuild the base at the edge. The base should extend past the pavers so the edge has something solid to sit on. We rebuild and compact it.
- Re-secure the restraint. We reset or replace the edging, or recommend a stronger edge where vehicles drive over it.
- Close the gaps. Field pavers are pushed back tight against each other so the joints are even again.
- Re-sand, clean and seal. Silica joint sand, or colored joint sand as an upgrade, then sealing.
Edges and Sunken Areas Go Together
When an edge fails, the base along it often fails too, and that leads to dips and low spots. If your driveway has both a spreading edge and a sinking section, we fix them together. Our page on sunken paver driveway repair covers that side of it.
Sealing Helps Hold Everything Together
Once the edge is solid and the joints are tight, sealing is the final step. It helps lock the joint sand in, so the pavers keep pressing evenly against each other and against the edge. It also slows the water that softens soil along the border. Our paver sealing carries a 3-year sealer warranty, and the repair work is backed by a 60-day craftsmanship guarantee.
Edges Along Lawns, Beds and Pool Cages
Around Jacksonville homes, edges meet a lot of different things: St. Augustine grass that is mowed and edged weekly, mulch beds that get refreshed and watered, and screen enclosure footers around pool decks. Each one puts its own stress on the border. Lawn equipment can chip or push the edge row, beds hold moisture against it, and enclosure footers can settle on their own. When we repair an edge, we look at what’s next to it so the fix suits that spot. A quick look along your borders after mowing season is an easy way to catch movement early.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you fix just one side of the driveway?
Yes. We repair the edges that have failed and leave sound sections alone.
Do I need new pavers?
Usually not. We reuse your pavers and replace only cracked or broken ones.
Will landscapers damage it again?
We’ll show you where the edge is so your landscaper can work around it.
How do I schedule an estimate?

Why does my driveway edge keep sinking into the grass?
Usually the base doesn’t extend far enough past the pavers, or the edging has loosened in sandy soil. Rebuilding the base at the edge and re-securing the restraint fixes it.
