Uneven Pavers Are a Trip Hazard. Here’s How We Fix Them.

A single paver sticking up a half inch doesn’t look like much until a grandparent catches a toe on it, or a kid on a scooter goes over the handlebars. Uneven walkways and patios are one of the most common hazards around Jacksonville homes, and they are almost always fixable without replacing the whole surface.

We’re Jax Exterior Cleaning & Paver Sealing, licensed and insured since 2019. We level raised and sunken pavers on walkways, front entries, patios and lanai areas, then seal them so they stay put. This page covers trip hazards and uneven patios. For an overview of all our paver repair work, see our main repair page.

What Makes Pavers Uneven

Settling

Some pavers drop below their neighbors because the base underneath has washed out or compressed. The edge of the next paver then becomes the lip you trip on.

Heaving

Others get pushed up, most often by tree roots, but also by base material that has shifted. Roots are common enough here that we have a separate page on tree root paver repair.

Loose, rocking pavers

When the joint sand washes out, pavers lose the friction that holds them together. They start to rock, chip at the corners and sit at slightly different heights.

Patio edges drifting outward

On a patio without a strong edge restraint, the outer row slowly creeps away from the house. Gaps open up and the edge drops. Our edge restraint repair page explains that in detail.

Where We See Trip Hazards Most

  • Front walkways from the driveway to the door
  • Steps and landings at the front entry
  • Back patios and lanai extensions, especially along screen enclosures
  • Paths beside the house where gutters drain
  • Around pool decks, where wet feet make a lip even more dangerous

If you are expecting guests, preparing to sell, or have older family members visiting, these are the spots worth walking with a careful eye.

How We Level an Uneven Walkway or Patio

We start with a free look, which takes about 5 to 10 minutes. We find which pavers are high, which are low and why. Then we:

  1. Lift the pavers in the uneven area and set them aside in order.
  2. Correct the base. Low spots get new base material, compacted. High spots get the cause removed, whether that is displaced base or a root we can safely address.
  3. Screed a fresh, level bedding layer so the reset pavers sit flush with their neighbors.
  4. Reset the original pavers and replace any that are cracked or broken.
  5. Refill the joints with silica joint sand, or colored joint sand as an upgrade.
  6. Clean and seal.

The goal is a surface you can walk across barefoot without feeling a single edge.

Uneven Patios and Drainage

Leveling is not only about safety. A patio needs a slight slope away from the house so rain runs off instead of pooling against the slab or the screen enclosure. When we reset a patio, we keep that drainage in mind. If water has been ponding in the same corner after storms, tell us. That corner is usually where the next problem starts.

Sealing Keeps It Level Longer

Once the pavers are level, the job is to keep them there. Joint sand is what holds pavers together, and Jacksonville rain is very good at washing it out. Sealing helps lock that sand in place so the pavers keep their grip on each other. It also slows weeds and ants, which push sand out of the joints as they dig.

Our paver sealing carries a 3-year sealer warranty. The repair work itself is backed by a 60-day craftsmanship guarantee. For walkways and patios, many homeowners pick a matte finish. Pool areas always get a matte-finish sealer.

Getting Ready to Sell or Host

Uneven walkways are one of the first things buyers and inspectors notice, and one of the first things guests trip over at a holiday gathering. Around Jacksonville, many homeowners call us before listing a home or before family comes into town. Leveling the front walk and entry, cleaning and sealing makes the whole front of the house look cared for, and it removes a real safety concern. If you have a date in mind, tell us when you call and we’ll do our best to fit it in.

It also helps to walk your pavers at night with the porch light on. Shadows from raised edges show up clearly, and you’ll spot problem pavers you may miss in daylight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you fix just a few raised pavers?

Yes. Small repairs are common. We fix the area that has moved and blend it in.

Will sealing make my walkway slippery?

We pick a finish that suits the area. Matte finishes keep a natural feel underfoot.

Is it worth repairing an older patio?

Often, yes. If most of the pavers are sound, leveling, re-sanding and sealing can make an older patio look and feel close to new. Our page on repair vs. replacing pavers walks through how to decide.
