Travertine Sealing in Jacksonville

Travertine is a natural stone, and it behaves differently from concrete pavers. It is porous, it is softer, and it can be etched by acids, stained by leaves and rust, and worn by salt water. It stays cool under bare feet, which is why it is so popular on pool decks and patios around Jacksonville. Sealing it properly keeps it looking like stone instead of a stained, dull surface.

We’re Jax Exterior Cleaning & Paver Sealing, licensed and insured since 2019. This page is just about travertine. For concrete pavers and our overall process, see our main paver sealing page.

Why Travertine Is Different From Concrete Pavers

  • It’s porous. Natural holes and pores soak up water, dirt and stains.
  • It’s softer. Aggressive pressure can etch or scar it, so cleaning has to be gentler.
  • It reacts to acid. Harsh acidic cleaners can dull and etch travertine. We don’t use them on stone.
  • It’s often tumbled. Tumbled edges and texture are part of the look, and the right sealer keeps that look.

Common Travertine Problems We See

  • Leaf and tannin stains from oaks over the pool
  • Rust spots from irrigation water
  • Black mildew in shaded corners
  • White salt or mineral residue from salt-water pools
  • Old sealer that is cloudy, peeling or patchy
  • Low joints with sand washing out

Gentle Cleaning Before Sealing

We clean travertine with controlled pressure and a surface cleaner, adjusted for stone, plus stone-safe treatments for mildew and stains. The goal is to clean it thoroughly without damaging the surface. Stone has to be fully dry before sealing, so we pay close attention to the weather and timing.

Choosing a Finish for Travertine

Most homeowners want travertine to look like natural stone, so we usually recommend a natural, penetrating-style finish that protects without adding a shiny film. That also helps keep a pool deck comfortable underfoot. Some people prefer a richer, color-enhanced look, which brings out the warm tones in the stone. We’ll show you the difference and help you decide. See our wet look vs. natural guide.

Cracked or Settled Travertine

Travertine pavers can crack or settle like any paver, especially around pools and where roots run under the deck. Sealing should come after repairs, not before. We can reset settled pieces and replace cracked ones when you have matching stone. Our pool deck paver repair and paver repair pages cover that work.

Our Travertine Sealing Process

  1. Inspection. We check for cracks, settling, stains and any old sealer.
  2. Repair if needed. Settled or broken pieces are dealt with first.
  3. Stone-safe clean. Controlled pressure and stone-safe treatments.
  4. Re-sand. Silica joint sand, or colored sand as an upgrade.
  5. Seal. A finish chosen for stone and for how you use the area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does travertine really need sealing?

Unsealed travertine soaks up stains and water easily. Sealing makes it much easier to keep clean and helps protect it, especially around salt-water pools.

Will the sealer make travertine shiny?

Not unless you want it to. We usually recommend a natural finish that keeps the stone look.

Can you get leaf stains out of travertine?

Most leaf and tannin stains lighten a lot with the right treatment. We’ll set expectations before we start.

Can you seal travertine and concrete pavers at the same home?

Yes. Many homes have a paver driveway and a travertine pool deck, and we handle both.

Is it covered by the warranty?

Yes. Our sealing carries a 3-year sealer warranty.
