What Salt Air Actually Does to Your Pavers
Salt is the part most people don’t account for. It settles on the surface, works into the pores of unsealed pavers, and stays there. Combined with UV exposure, it accelerates the surface breakdown that makes older pavers look chalky and washed out — that stage where you start seeing the little white aggregate coming through and the smooth top layer is gone.
Sealing puts a barrier between all of that and the paver itself. On a coastal property it isn’t a cosmetic upgrade, it’s the thing that decides whether you’re resealing in three years or relaying in ten.
Travertine Pool Decks in Ponte Vedra
A lot of homes out here have travertine around the pool rather than brick pavers, and travertine gets treated differently. It’s more porous, it stains more easily, and most homeowners don’t want a high-gloss finish on a pool deck.
We seal travertine with a matte finish as the default. It protects the stone without turning your deck into a mirror, and it doesn’t change the barefoot feel the way a heavy wet-look coat can. Travertine also takes two coats rather than the three we’d put on brand-new brick pavers that have never been sealed.

Faded, chalky color
Sun and salt strip the color out of the surface. The pigment is usually still there underneath — a proper cleaning and a color-enhancing wet-look sealer brings it back, often to the point where people think the driveway was replaced.
Joint sand washing out
Sandy ground plus heavy summer rain plus any slope at all, and the joint sand migrates. Once the joints drop, the pavers stop supporting each other and start to move independently. That’s the point where a sealing job turns into a repair job, so it’s worth catching early.
Weeds and ants in the joints
Both are symptoms of the same thing — empty joints. We use silica paver joint sand, which sets up as hard as polymeric or harder, and then seal over it. No open space means nothing to root in and nothing for ants to tunnel through.
Algae and mildew on the shaded side
Humidity here doesn’t let anything dry out completely. North-facing patios and anything under tree cover will green up. We soft wash it off before sealing, and sealed surfaces are far less hospitable to it coming back.

Every job runs the same way. We inspect the surface and flag any repairs before we touch a sealer. We pressure wash the pavers to remove dirt, algae, mildew, and any old failed sealer. We replace the joint sand — silica, in tan, black, brown, or grey to match or contrast your pavers. Then we apply our premium two-part water-base urethane sealer, two coats as standard, three on new brick pavers that have never been sealed. Then it cures.
