Paver Re-Leveling and Re-Sanding
Not every paver problem needs a major repair. A lot of Jacksonville driveways, patios and pool decks are basically sound but have started to look tired: joints are half empty, a few pavers rock underfoot, there are minor low spots, and weeds are moving in. For those surfaces, re-leveling and re-sanding is the right fix. It restores the surface before small problems turn into a bigger job.
We’re Jax Exterior Cleaning & Paver Sealing, licensed and insured since 2019. Re-leveling and re-sanding is part of our paver repair service, and it is almost always followed by sealing.
Re-Leveling vs. Re-Sanding
Re-leveling
Re-leveling means lifting pavers that sit high or low, correcting the bedding underneath and setting them back flush. It’s for scattered low spots, slight dips and individual pavers that have shifted. Deeper sinking, where the base itself has washed out, is a bigger repair. Our sunken driveway repair page covers that.
Re-sanding
Re-sanding means cleaning out the joints and refilling them with fresh joint sand. Joint sand is what holds pavers together through friction. When it’s gone, pavers rock, edges chip and weeds and ants move in.
Signs You Need It
- Joints that are visibly empty or below the paver surface
- Sand washed onto the driveway or into the street after storms
- Pavers that wobble or click when you walk on them
- A handful of low spots, but no large sunken areas
- Weeds, grass or ant hills in the joints
We also have a page about weeds and ants between pavers, since empty joints are usually the root of that problem.
Our Sand: Silica, With Colored Sand as an Upgrade
We refill joints with silica joint sand. It fills the joints fully and locks in well once the surface is sealed. If you want a finished look, colored joint sand is available as an upgrade, chosen to match or contrast with your pavers. If your HOA has rules about appearance, it’s worth checking before choosing a color.
How the Process Works
- Free look. We check how much sand is missing, which pavers have moved and whether anything deeper is going on. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes, and you don’t need to be home.
- Clean. We clean the surface and the joints, removing old sand, dirt, weeds and growth.
- Re-level. Pavers that are high or low are lifted, the bedding is corrected and they’re reset flush.
- Re-sand. Joints are filled with silica sand, or colored sand, and compacted in so they’re full.
- Seal. Sealing locks the new sand in and protects the surface.
Why Sealing Matters Most After Re-Sanding
Fresh joint sand without a sealer is exposed to the same rain and irrigation that washed the old sand out. Sealing helps bind the sand at the surface of the joint, so it stays where it belongs. It also protects the pavers’ color from sun fading, slows weeds and ants, and makes cleaning easier.
Our paver sealing carries a 3-year sealer warranty, and re-leveling work is backed by our 60-day craftsmanship guarantee. You can pick a natural, matte look or a wet look. Pool decks and travertine get a matte-finish sealer.
A Good Option for Older Pavers
If your pavers have been down for years and you’re wondering whether to replace them, re-leveling, re-sanding and sealing is often the better answer. Clean, level, sealed pavers can look close to new. Our repair vs. replace page goes into how to decide.
Why Joint Sand Disappears So Fast Here
Jacksonville summers bring heavy afternoon storms almost every day, and most yards run irrigation on top of that. Pressure washing without re-sanding afterward removes even more. Put together, it’s normal to see joints empty out within a few years on unsealed pavers. Leaf blowers aimed at the pavers don’t help either. That’s why we always pair re-sanding with sealing, and why we suggest checking your joints each spring before the rainy season starts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I just add sand myself?
You can top off joints, but if the pavers are uneven or the joints are full of dirt and weeds, sand on top won’t fix it. Cleaning, leveling and sealing makes it last.
How often should pavers be re-sanded?
It depends on rain, irrigation and whether the pavers are sealed. Sealed joints hold their sand much longer.
What kind of joint sand do you use?
We use silica joint sand, with colored joint sand as an upgrade.
How do I schedule?
Call 904-444-9190, Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 5 PM.
Can colored joint sand go in an existing patio?
Yes. Colored joint sand is an upgrade we can add during re-sanding, and sealing helps keep it in place. Check your HOA rules first if you have them.
