Driveway Paver Sealing in Jacksonville
Your driveway takes more punishment than any other paver surface at your home. Cars turn their tires on it, oil and tire marks build up where you park, sprinklers hit it every morning, and Florida rain tries to wash the joint sand out after every storm. A sealed driveway holds its color, keeps its sand, and cleans up far more easily than a bare one.
We’re Jax Exterior Cleaning & Paver Sealing, licensed and insured since 2019. This page is about driveways specifically. For an overview of our full process, see our main paver sealing page.
What Makes Driveways Different
A patio carries foot traffic. A driveway carries a few tons every time you pull in. That weight, plus turning tires, is what loosens joint sand and lets pavers creep and settle. Driveways also collect things patios don’t: oil drips, tire marks, rust from irrigation water, fertilizer stains blown off the lawn, and leaf tannins from oaks along the street. Sealing a driveway is partly about looks and partly about holding everything in place under that load.
Signs Your Driveway Is Ready for Sealing
- The color has gone flat or chalky, especially in full sun
- Joints are low, and sand ends up in the gutter after rain
- Weeds or ant hills along the joints and edges
- Dark mildew in shaded strips and along the garage
- Oil and tire marks that won’t wash out
- It has been more than about three years since the last seal
Fix It First, Then Seal
Sealing locks in whatever is there. If the apron at the street has sunk, if there is a dip where you park, or if tree roots have lifted a section, sealing over it just preserves the problem. When we look at your driveway, we check for settling first. If it is needed, we handle the paver repair and re-leveling, and then seal everything together. If your driveway is sinking, our sunken paver driveway repair page explains that work.
Our Driveway Sealing Process
- Inspection. We look for settling, loose edges, stains and old sealer.
- Repair if needed. Sunken or lifted areas are reset on a rebuilt base.
- Deep clean. We pressure wash and surface clean the pavers and pull out old sand, weeds and debris from the joints. Oil and rust spots get pre-treated.
- Re-sand. Joints are refilled with silica joint sand. Colored joint sand is available as an upgrade.
- Seal. We apply sealer to lock the sand in and protect the surface, in a wet look or natural finish.
- Cure. Plan to keep cars off for the cure time we give you, usually about a day.
Keeping Cars Off
The most common question we get is about parking. Foot traffic is usually fine within a few hours, but vehicles need longer. We’ll tell you exactly when it’s safe to park again for your sealer and the weather that day. Many homeowners park on the street or in the garage overnight, and if you are in an HOA, it’s worth checking street parking rules ahead of time.
Oil, Rust and Tire Marks
We pre-treat stains before sealing, and many lighten a lot. Some deep oil or rust stains won’t come out completely, and we’ll tell you up front what to expect. Once the driveway is sealed, new spills sit on top of the surface longer, so they’re much easier to wipe or rinse up before they soak in.
Picking a Finish for a Driveway
A wet look finish deepens the color and gives a light sheen, and it’s the most popular choice for front driveways because it boosts curb appeal. A natural finish protects without changing the look much. Not sure? Our wet look vs. natural sealer guide compares them.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does driveway sealing take?
Most driveways are cleaned, sanded and sealed in one day, with cure time after. Repairs can add time.
When can I drive on it?
We’ll give you a time based on the sealer and the weather. Plan on keeping cars off for about a day.
Will sealing stop my pavers from sinking?
Sealing helps keep sand in the joints and water out of the base, which helps. But if pavers have already sunk, they need to be repaired first.
Can you remove oil stains?
We pre-treat them and most lighten a lot. Some deep stains won’t disappear completely, and we’ll tell you before we start.
How long does the seal last?
It’s covered by our 3-year sealer warranty. Most driveways are resealed about every two to three years.
