Wet Look vs. Natural Paver Sealer: Which Is Right for You?
The most common question we get after “how much does it cost” is “which finish should I get?” Both options protect your pavers and lock in the joint sand. The difference is how they look and where they make the most sense. Here is a plain comparison to help you decide before your estimate.
We’re Jax Exterior Cleaning & Paver Sealing, licensed and insured since 2019. For our full sealing process, see our main paver sealing page.
What a Wet Look Finish Does
A wet look sealer deepens the color of the pavers so they look like they’ve just been rinsed. Reds get richer, grays get deeper, and faded pavers come back to life. It leaves a light sheen. It is the most popular choice for front driveways and entryways because it boosts curb appeal.
What a Natural Finish Does
A natural, matte sealer protects the pavers without changing their look much. They look clean and like the original paver, without a sheen. It’s often the best choice for pool decks, travertine and anyone who just wants protection without a glossy look.
Side by Side
| Wet look | Natural | |
|---|---|---|
| Color | Deeper, richer | Close to original |
| Sheen | Light sheen | Matte |
| Best for | Driveways, entries, patios | Pool decks, travertine, a subtle look |
| Traction when wet | Good, but we’re careful around pools | Keeps the most texture |
| Locks in joint sand | Yes | Yes |
| Warranty | 3-year sealer warranty | 3-year sealer warranty |
Questions to Ask Yourself
- Is it around a pool? We usually lean natural or low-sheen for bare feet.
- Is it stone? Travertine usually looks best natural. See travertine sealing.
- Are the pavers faded? A wet look brings back the most color.
- Do you have an HOA? Some communities have rules about finishes. Check before choosing a wet look.
- Do you want the driveway and pool deck to match? Some people do one of each.
Mixing Finishes at One Home
You don’t have to pick one for everything. A common setup here is wet look on the front driveway and entry, and natural on the pool deck in the back. We’ll walk you through it at the estimate.
What Matters More Than the Finish
A great finish over a bad surface won’t look great for long. Sunken spots, empty joints and leftover mildew all show through. That’s why we inspect first, fix what needs it with our paver repair service, clean thoroughly, re-sand with silica joint sand (colored sand as an upgrade), and only then seal.
Myths About Paver Sealer Finishes
- “Wet look is always slippery.” Not necessarily. The product and how it’s applied matter. We just take extra care around water.
- “Natural doesn’t protect as well.” Both finishes lock in sand and protect the surface.
- “You can’t change finishes later.” You often can at the next reseal, and we’ll tell you what that involves.
